Identification Resources

National Audubon Society Mushrooms of North America. Published in 2023 by the National Audubon Society. Portable, well-bound and illustrated, more comprehensive and up to date than many available guides.

Mushrooms of the Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada. Published in 2017; authored by Timothy J. Baroni. A reliable, portable, and comprehensive illustrated guide focused on our region’s wild fungi. Includes information on foraging and poisonous fungi. Contains foraging tips on how to recognize and avoid poisonous fungi.

 

Mushrooms of Northeast North America: Midwest to New England. Published in 2016; authored by George Barron. A good, compact, illustrated guide to fungi in our region. Like many older guides, it is somewhat dated regarding nomenclature.

 

Mushrooms of the Northeast: A Simple Guide to Common Mushrooms. Published in 2016; authored by Teresa Marrone and Walt Sturgeon. A compact, illustrated guide to northeastern mushrooms, especially suited for novice mushroom enthusiasts. Has sections on top toxics and edibles.

Foraging Resources

Wild Mushrooms: A Cookbook and Foraging Guide. Published in 2020; authored by Kristen and Trent Blizzard. Attractively illustrated hardcover supplement to foraging information in the other guides, with additional emphasis on cleaning, preparing, and cooking wild fungi.

Mushrooms for Health: Medicinal Secrets of Northeastern Fungi. Published in 2009; authored by Greg A. Marley. A guide for where to find, uses, and how to prepare 10 unmistakable fungi species.
